The Staunton Redevelopment and Housing Authority (SRHA) has been serving the City of Staunton since 1961, providing safe, affordable housing and pathways to opportunity for working families, seniors, individuals with disabilities, and veterans. As a public housing authority operating under Virginia Title 36, we work to ensure that everyone in our community has access to quality housing and the resources needed to thrive.
SRHA administers two primary housing programs through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD):
Multifamily Apartments: We own and manage 150 units across two properties—Elizabeth Miller Gardens and Farrier Court—providing quality apartments and townhomes ranging from 1 to 5 bedrooms for eligible low-income families and individuals.
Housing Choice Voucher Program: Commonly known as Section 8, our voucher program helps eligible families, seniors, and individuals afford privately-owned rental housing throughout Staunton and Augusta County. We also administer VASH vouchers specifically for veterans experiencing homelessness.
Beyond housing assistance, we provide resident support services including eviction prevention programs, financial literacy education through our partnership with Atlantic Union Bank, connections to healthcare through Augusta Health's mobile clinic, and emergency resources like our food pantry.
SRHA is governed by a Board of Commissioners appointed by Staunton City Council. The Board sets policy direction and appoints the Executive Director, who oversees daily operations. Our team is committed to responsive, efficient service that puts residents first.
In 2024, SRHA was selected to join the fifth cohort of HUD's Moving to Work (MTW) Demonstration Program. This designation allows us to design innovative, locally-tailored strategies to better serve our community while increasing administrative efficiency. Learn more about our MTW designation

We believe that stable, affordable housing is the foundation for opportunity. Every day, we work to ensure our residents have not just a place to live, but a platform from which to build better futures—whether that means maintaining stable employment, completing education, achieving financial independence, or simply aging in place with dignity.

Staunton Housing Corporation (SHC): The Staunton Housing Corporation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and a nonstock affiliate of the SRHA. The primary purpose of the SHC is to support the mission and programs of the SRHA, and to further the economic development of the community, including the elimination of conditions of blight and deterioration, and the promotion and assistance of economic and housing opportunities. The SHC is recognized as a Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO) through Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.
Through strategic partnerships and asset development, SHC focuses on long-term affordable housing development, historic preservation, and homeownership initiatives that expand affordable housing opportunities beyond traditional rental assistance.
